These symbols often represented elements of nature, animals, and human figures, and are believed to have held spiritual meaning connected to gods, spirits, and shamans. One of the most well-known Taíno figures is Atabey, the mother goddess and deity of fertility and fresh water, often depicted with a woman’s head and body and frog-like legs.
